The AP English classroom at CMR recently had the pleasure of a guest speaker. Frank X Walker, a creative writing teacher of the University of Kentucky, was invited by the Great Falls Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center for his historical poetry on York. York was a black slave during the Corps of Discovery, but little else is known about him. One of his major goals as a writer is “making the invisible visible” and he wants to get York’s story out there. When asked about being a poet, he responded “I don’t think of myself as a poet. I’m a teacher first, then an artist and activist.” He does have advice for up and coming poets. “In order to write a poem all you need is memory, research, and imagination.”
