On August 25, the front commons and parking lot of C.M. Russell High School came alive with the annual Rustler Roundup, a tradition that marks the start of every new school year. What’s usually a quiet space in the front common area of CMR was soon buzzing with energy by 5 p.m.
Food trucks like Mountain Berry Bowls, Mac Attack, Jammer’s BBQ, and True Brew lined the street, filling the air with mouthwatering aromas. Along both sides of the school, students showcased their clubs and organizations—including speech and debate, yearbook, newspaper, and HOSA—enthusiastically welcoming newcomers into their groups.
Everywhere, Rustler pride was on display. Cheerleaders, Wranglers, and the band brought music, cheers, and dancing to the front lawn stage, painting the evening with an unmistakable green-and-gold spirit.
The Roundup also served as the official kickoff for fall sports. Principal Mrs. McGraw introduced each team—cheer, cross country, dance, football, soccer, and volleyball—before team leaders stepped forward to share words of encouragement for the season ahead.
Then came one of the event’s most anticipated traditions: the tug-of-war. Teams battled it out, with the football squad taking this year’s win and the band earning an impressive second place.
As the sun set, the celebration moved indoors for a back-to-school dance in the auxiliary gym. Students filled the space with laughter and music, enjoying food and drinks as they capped off the night together.
More than just a kickoff, the Rustler Roundup is a celebration of community and welcome for new students. It highlights CMR’s traditions and sets the tone for the year ahead. With fall sports underway and countless opportunities to get involved, Rustlers are ready to carry their pride forward into another unforgettable year.
