The Rustlers kicked off homecoming week with one of the most anticipated traditions — the annual Powderpuff football game. On September 29 at Memorial Stadium, the girls took the field while the boys switched roles to coach, cheer, and play wrangler for the night. Powderpuff is a fun and competitive event where students trade roles for an evening of school spirit and laughter. This year, the Juniors teamed up with the Freshmen to take on the Seniors and Sophomores. After an exciting game, the Juniors and Freshmen came out on top with a final score of 31-6.
Kenna Christensen made MVP for the Junior team and said that it felt great to have a successful game with all of her best friends playing on her side. Her favorite moment of the night was scoring a pick six in the last seconds and celebrating with her teammates.
“Our teamwork and trust in each other made a huge impact! I also think just having fun took a lot of the pressure off and just let us enjoy the moment,” Christensen said. She explained that most of their team already shared a strong connection off the field.
“We all just fed off of each other’s energy, and the majority of our team played soccer, so we all have a tight bond.” When asked to describe her team in one word, she said, “Sexy — we look good in them football jerseys.”
On the other side of the field, sophomore Reyna Guillen, another powder puff player, shared her thoughts on the game and her team’s performance. She said that even though the score didn’t go their way, the experience was still unforgettable.
“The defense was amazing—we didn’t let them score off defense,” Guillen said. She explained that playing alongside her friends and keeping a positive attitude made the night special.
“Being able to play together and having fun was great. We stayed loud and kept cheering for each other even though it didn’t go our way,” she said. When asked what her team learned, she joked, “To not let the boys coach the girls’ offense! I think we could’ve done a little better offense-wise.”
Despite the outcome, Guillen said being part of Powderpuff meant a lot to her. “Having fun with my best friends, laughing, working hard, and playing football when we normally don’t get to — that’s what it’s all about.”
Both teams showed incredible energy, teamwork, and school pride throughout the night, making this year’s Powderpuff game another memorable highlight of homecoming week.
