Mountains of food, materials, and everyday essentials filled the hallways of C. M. Russell High School on Oct. 28, ready to be brought into the food pantry to help the next students in need.
“Trick or Treat so Kids can Eat” is an annual tradition that has been around since 2002, and it stands strong with the current drama department. The student bodies including; the honors society, thespian group, Pirates of Penzance, and students involved with theater, all play their part in supporting the cause.
This annual event began with former theater teacher Stacey Bergquist, and it has been led by teacher Chris Evans for the past 15 years.
“The food pantry is a big part of helping our CMR community,” he said.
Previously, students visited neighborhoods, going door to door asking for donations. However, they found that their new strategy has been much more effective. On Oct. 26, students dedicated a full day to encouraging shoppers at grocery stores Albertsons and Smith’s to purchase non-perishable items and donate them on their way out. This year, using this new method, a large amount of goods was collected in less than six hours.
The amount of food accumulated will be determined later this week with a goal in mind of hitting past records of more than 2,000 pounds of food along with $1,537.85 in monetary donations.
“If we can help, we can help,” Evans said.
