On April 27, a breezy and warm Sunday afternoon, the Ice Breaker – an annual road race that is run by hundreds of people each year – took place in Great Falls. The race features three distances – the 5-mile, the 3-mile, and the 1-mile.
No matter how individual runners place in the race, they always get a medal. The winner of the 5-mile race wins $1500, second place wins $750,and third place wins $500. There also are awards for masters, people over the age of 40. They win $200 for first place in the 5-mile race and $100 for second place. The winner of the 3-mile race earns $100.
Runners in 2025 included members of the C. M. Russell High School track distance team. Another notable face included Branch Brady, one of the cross country coaches at CMR. CMR graduates Garret Bodily and Brayden Sundquist – who placed 9th in the male top ten.
