The 2025 Election Day, held on November 4th, was far from a useless Tuesday. Though it wasn’t a presidential election year, ballots were cast, decisions were made, and new leaders have now emerged.
The most important results of the night came from Virginia, New York, New Jersey, and California. These are the results that all high school students should know:
Virginia: Abigail Spanberger Victory

In Virginia, election day brought a major change. Democrat Abigail Spanberger won the governor’s office, shifting it from Republican to Democratic leadership. This change moved the state from a Republican “trifecta” (governor, attorney general, secretary of state) to a Democratic one.
The impact?
- First Female Governor for Virginia!
- These results showed that many Virginians were dissatisfied with the president’s agenda, mainly due to rising costs and frustration with national Republican leadership.
- With a Democratic governor now, it’s likely we will see more progressive policies on things like jobs, schools, and social programs.
- Since Democrats also hold those other major state offices, they’ll have more power to pass laws and make important appointments in the future.

New Jersey: Mikie Sherrill Victory

In New Jersey, Democrat Mikie Sherrill won the governor’s race, keeping the state under Democratic control. She won by a margin of 13.7 percentage points (56.6% vs 42.9%) against Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli.
The impact?
- Sherrill’s win shows that even in strong Democratic states, voters were still looking for change, especially regarding the economy and cost of living.
- With a Democratic governor and likely a supportive legislature, it will be easier for important policies, like infrastructure, taxes, or business programs, to actually get done.
- Nationally, New Jersey’s results demonstrate that Democrats can succeed in suburban areas if they can engage a large turnout and attract “middle” voters who don’t usually pick a political side.

New York: Zohran Mamdani Victory
Zohran Mamdani won the NYC mayoral race with 50.4% of the vote, defeating Andrew Cuomo (Independent) who received 41.6%, and Curtis Sliwa (Republican candidate) with 8.0%.
His victory indicates a significant shift toward younger, progressive leadership in the city. Mamdani advocated towards making housing more affordable, improving public transit, and expanding social services during his campaign. Younger and more diverse voters turned out in large numbers, showing a big impact on city elections.
The impact?
- NYC’s youngest and first Muslim mayor!
- Mamdani’s win shows NYC is ready for younger, more progressive leadership
- It proves that younger voters can really make a difference in big cities.
- Could give Democrats across the country a good example on how to energize voters, seeing how successful this was.

California: Preposition 50 Victory

Even though the governor’s office didn’t change, California voters approved Proposition 50, allowing the state legislature to redraw U.S. House district maps for the next elections.
What that means?: Basically, It decides which areas vote for which congressional representatives, which can influence which party holds more power in Congress. We may see interesting effects in the upcoming 2028 presidential election.
The impact?
- Changing district lines is significant nationally because House races can be very close, and the new maps might give Democrats a better advantage in California.
- It shows that local decisions, like drawing district lines, can really affect national politics.
- For Republicans, it’s a warning…these maps might make it harder to win back seats.
- Democrats are using this change to protect the seats they already have.
