Steinbeck fans will be thrilled to know that there are plans to make new film adaptations of East of Eden and Grapes of Wrath.

Grapes of Wrath will likely come out first, produced by Steven Spielberg with DreamWorks.  The novel is about a poor farming family struggling to survive in the Great Depression.

East of Eden, an allegory of the Book of Genesis will probably come out later, as it is set to be directed by Gary Ross of “Hunger Games” (which has two more installments), and it will star Jennifer Lawrence as Cathy Ames.

Classical film fans are skeptical of the new installments, as both novels were made into film adaptations in the 40s and 50s; however, they are optimistic because of Spielberg’s and Lawrence’s involvement in the projects.
