When Sally McHugh began her education at the University of Montana, teaching high school English was not on her radar.

McHugh, who is in her first year of teaching, earned her bachelor’s degree in theater and film.

“I was always interested in dramatic theater. I got to teach the students through [theater], but then I realized I wanted to be a teacher in English,” McHugh said. “I wasn’t always on the path to become a teacher. I really love literature and writing.”

She got inspiration to become a teacher from several sources.

“I did some programs in undergrad — like volunteering and whatnot — that led me to it. My sister and brother-in-law are also teachers, so they kind of inspired me to do it.”

McHugh was born and raised in Helena.

“I grew up near the Capital part of town, so kind of in the state government neighborhood there,” she said.

When McHugh is not at CMR, she said she goes home to a special friend.

“I have one dog, who is a Pomeranian, who is kind of the love of my life. His name is Blaze.”
